UK based Buzz Marine, the suppliers of HubbaX mobile broadband for maritime applications, has developed a new system for its mini dome to allow automatic switch from a vessel’s VSAT communications system to its land-based mobile system on which the HubbaX operates. The changeover is delivered through an intelligent ‘switchbox’ which prefers the 3G signal, when no 3G signal is available VSAT connection continues.

With the signal strength benefits of the HubbaX (up to four times more powerful and more stable than a mobile phone) connection can be achieved up to 20 miles offshore, providing considerable cost savings for on-board communications. Using unique patented aerial technology and 3G networks, Buzz Marine’s HubbaX creates affordable wi-fi internet access on a vessel without the need for a more costly satellite connection until you are cruising many miles offshore.

Together with VoIP telephony the HubbaX can act as an extension to a home or business telephone system wherever the boat is around the coast. The new software will enable the HubbaX to recognize when it is in range and automatically switch from VSAT to HubbaX, no manual intervention is required producing a seamless transfer for on-board communications. Providing wi-fi for laptops, tablets and other mobile devices, the HubbaX is fully water and weather-proof with an IP66 rating, and can be mounted on the coachroof or mast with a standard 1-inch marine antenna mount. Powered by a 12v DC power pack, the marine broadband unit is also protected by industry standard security protocol WEP, WPA and WPA2.

With typical download speeds of 7Mbps (Megabit per second) and uploads of 1Mbps, the HubbaX allows boat owners to access important information such as weather conditions and stay connected while at sea. The HubbaX has a rrp of £595 plus VAT (negotiable if part of a data package from Buzz Connect). The new VSAT switch system costs an additional £125 plus VAT.
