Northrop Grumman Corporation won two contracts from the U.S.
Navy for maintenance and modernization work on aircraft carriers based
in San Diego and Yokosuka, Japan. The company's Newport News sector is
the prime contractor for the work.
Northrop Grumman, the nation's sole designer, builder and
refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, was awarded a one-year
contract with four one-year options to manage the continuous
maintenance of the USS Nimitz, USS Ronald Reagan and other nuclear
aircraft carriers at North Island in San Diego. The potential value of
the contract is more than $120 million and will include planning,
engineering, maintenance and modernization work. The Navy has initially
awarded Northrop Grumman $4.9 million for work associated with a
maintenance availability for USS Nimitz in October 2007.
Northrop Grumman Newport News was also awarded a $1.8 million
contract to begin preparations for the USS George Washington's arrival
to Japan in June 2008. This contract is in support of the U.S. Navy's
Ship Repair Facility and Regional Maintenance Center in Yokosuka,
Japan. Northrop Grumman will continue its aircraft carrier support
contract in Japan with Sumitomo Heavy Industries. These contracts are
part of an anticipated multi-year effort to support nuclear aircraft
carriers in Japan.
