Navy to Host USV Technology Workshop

Friday, September 30, 2005
The Navy will host a three-day workshop for industry on the development of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and related technologies for Anti-Submarine Warfare Oct. 18-20 in Washington, DC.

The workshop will be a forum for government-industry discussions on control systems, sensors, unmanned operations and the adaptations of small craft design for support of Littoral Combat Ships missions. The workshop falls under the auspices of the July 11broad agency announcement USVs offer capability for anti-submarine warfare and other warfare missions.

Recent USV research and development efforts include the Spartan Scout Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration, and the ASW Mission Module USV Advanced Developmental Model. The Navy has experimented with USV platforms and will discuss their results in this forum. The Navy plans to award a new 24-month contract to develop, fabricate and test two prototype USV platforms and related support equipment.

Key government organizations involved in the upcoming USV workshop are: The Program Executive Office, Littoral and Mine Warfare's (PEO LMW) Mission Modules Program Office (PMS 420); the Space and Naval Warfare Systems center in San Diego, Calif.; the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division; and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division's Norfolk and Panama City detachments.
