McMurdo EPIRB Gains Type Approval

Thursday, August 31, 2006
McMurdo gained Type Approval for the new Smartfind EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). The Smartfind range of EPIRBs were designed with both a non-hazardous battery and high brightness LED locator light to achieve type approval. The certification by COSPAS SARSAT, the international satellite-based search and rescue system, means that the Smartfind is compliant with maritime regulations. The Smartfind is available as either the standard Smartfind E5 or the Smartfind Plus G5 which offers an additional high level of accuracy with its integral GPS receiver. Both are compact and robust with comprehensive diagnostic and self test facilities. The Smartfind Plus also gives visual indication of GPS acquisition and both models have a battery status monitor and a five-year warranty, along with a five-year battery change interval. The Smartfind EPIRB works by transmitting radio signals which are detected by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network. A distress signal is automatically relayed through an automatic ground station to a control center where it is decoded and the distress and registration details are passed on to the relevant search and rescue authority.
