IMO Approval, OptiMarin Ballast System

Monday, November 16, 2009

OptiMarin AS has received Type Approval Certificate for the OptiMarin Ballast System (OBS). The Type Approval Certificate has been issued by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Administration and confirms OptiMarin’s compliance with IMO’s International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004.

The OptiMarin Ballast System has been tested extensively at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) in accordance with IMO’s G8 guidelines with excellent results. The ship board testing requirement was completed aboard the Klaveness cement carrier KCL Banshee using DNV and NIVA for testing and verification.

Based on the test results at NIVA, OptiMarin have received confirmation from the California State Land Commission that OptiMarin meets their standard for Best Available Technologies to be implemented starting 2010.

The OptiMarin Ballast System (OBS) is based on the idea that such a system should be as simple as possible to operate. OBS is a mechanical system based on filtration and UV and does not affect the normal operation of the ship. It is easy to install on board existing ships as well as on new-builds and uses standardized components for all flow configurations. The system does not introduce chemicals, electro-chemical generators or biocides in its treatment process.

The key benefits of the Type Approved OptiMarin Ballast System are that it has a simple and reliable design with few movable parts. The system is operated as part of the normal ballast system with a low pressure loss.  The system generates no extra noise and has a low weight and a small foot print.
