In order to avoid traffic problems Naples port's new maxi-crane arrived by night. The new crane destined for Cantieri del Mediterraneo Spa can lift 650 tons on an arm which can be adjusted from 60 metres to 96 metres. The crane is semi-mobile on 22 enormous wheels and cost euro 2,8 million. There are only two such cranes in Italy. Luigi Salvatori head of Cantieri del Mediterraneo stated " the Port Authority is increasingly attentive towards Naples' ship yards. We with the practicality which we have always demonstrated are playing our part. We planned investment of euro 23 million for modernisation and in the past 5 years we have spent euro 8.8 million with a further euro 7.5 million in progress ". For example ? " we have 4 dry docks, three structures and one floating. We have been rebuilding number 3 since January and expect to complete in October. Our company covers an area of 160,000 square metres including work shops, offices, 5 wharfes as well as all the plant and equipment needed for our business of ship repairs and transformation. We can take ships of 330 metres long with a beam of 40 metres."
